Consuming alcohol and tobacco at all hours of the day and using different messaging apps are some of the things this young woman has added to her list of differences between Spain and the United States.

Avery is a young American woman who has been living in Spain for a month and has decided to share with her TikTok followers a list she compiled of what she sees as the differences between life in the United States and life in Spain. She believes that many of the things Spaniards do, which she mentions in her video, would drive any American crazy.

The first «strange» thing she finds us doing here is that we use WhatsApp to communicate via messages. They use the pre-installed Apple app, iMessage. Avery is confused and doesn't understand why we choose one over the other; the real reason is that WhatsApp is compatible with all operating systems, while iMessage only works between iPhones.

Furthermore, there is another reason: WhatsApp was initially adopted because it is a free platform, thus saving the costs of traditional SMS messages, something very attractive to the Spanish population; unlike in countries like the United States, where free text messaging plans were more common.

She continues with the statement, “There are no water bottles anywhere.” The young woman explains that where she comes from, it’s very common to see people carrying water bottles everywhere, and that apparently, in Spain, you don’t see people drinking water. She says that Spaniards don’t hydrate themselves, that we only consume wine and beer, even to accompany all our meals, something that is far from the truth and has angered some users: “We only drink beer? What neighborhood has this girl been in?”

The third reason he gives is that people will be «smoking in your face» all the time. From his perspective, everyone smokes, even children, whom he claims smoke cigarettes during school recess. And finally, his fourth and last criticism is directed at the way people walk in the street: «No one will move to let you pass,» he says, adding that we walk very slowly because we're never in a hurry to get anywhere.

Obviously, the comments have exploded, and many people have been bothered by these accusations: «Assuming that Americans think Spain is Mexico…», «I drink water with meals, me and a million other Spaniards, let's not promote stereotypes,» and others who take it with humor: «We only do those things in front of you, so you can tell everyone about it later.»

This second comment is absolutely right; these are stereotypes. Although Spanish life includes beer, wine, and people strolling in a relaxed manner, it doesn't change the fact that these are all exaggerations.
